Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

*News Flash*

“The millennial generation has no respect for other generations.” OK, that may be a biased statement because it is coming from someone who is considered old by most millennials. Yet, it is true. And this attitude is the fault of older generations.
Since the baby boomer generation there has been a disturbing evolution of the human character: self-interest. A majority of baby boomers were affected by wars (i.e. WWII, Korea, and maybe even Vietnam). Their parents were always away from the house for extended periods of time due to either military responsibilities or taking care of the family by working multiple jobs. As the boomers were growing up they were neglected to an extent instigating self-interest. These factors amongst others led people becoming more independent compared to previous generations. While being independent and standing up for your personal beliefs is impressive it led to disintegration of human ethics and morals.

Boomers lacked attention from their parents so they went elsewhere to get it. Their search led them to the local drive-in, college, military, or commune. Creating individualism was a great accomplishment nevertheless had a profound effect on how Generation X and Y behaved.

The X and Y generations were given an extraordinary dose of reality. A good portion of the X and Y generation had two individuals as parents instead of one family. In most homes of X and Y generations commonly had only one parent in the household. It was common for parents to be caught up in their own lives rather than concentrate on their offspring. As most know the saying, “The apple does not fall far from the tree.” Meaning generation X and Y thought being independent was the appropriate way to be an adult.

It leads to present day where Generation X and Y have kids ranging from babies to their twenties where individualism has gone to the extreme. Most Millenials no longer have respect for their elders or others. The new generation has the motto of: “This is our world and nothing is going to stop us!” This is accepted with good cause because prior generations never paid much attention to common courtesy or unspoken delicacies towards others.

Furthermore; the majority of the developed general population has the “Adonis complex” where their sole focus is me, myself, & I. Numerous people’s interest only lies where the outcome benefits themselves. It’s a winner take all motto where good working relationships are not highly thought of. Moreover; people want everything now and do not understand the entire life-cycle of completing a project from start to finish. The intent is to get what they want and move on to the next item on their list. What is frightening is this attitude has been adopted by some corporations.

How do we get away from the Adonis attitude? Simply put: Change your perspective. Instead of looking from a perspective of only benefiting the individual’s, take some time and explore your decisions rationally. A majority of hot items tend to fizzle nowadays because it’s not the latest and greatest being pushed by an “overnight social media celebrity”.

Turn off the elitist attitude and become human again.
